How to use or difference between Tell and say or said and told


It sound really simple but yet its a little confusing.

SAY / SAID & TELL/TOLD

This is the most common error, we usually make and get confused with while using it.

SAY / SAID


Used to express

something using words and when the receiver isn’t mentioned.

TELL/TOLD
Used to give information to Peron and only when the receiver of the information is mentioned.
usually me/him/her/you/them etc....
are used directly after tell or told.
Both are used for verbal communication


so lets understand this with some examples

A. What did anna tell you
B. what did anna say.
.
.

A.I want to say some thing about your car
B. I want to tell you some thing about your car
.
.
A Did he say how the accident took place
B. Did he tell you how the accident took place.
.
.
A Say hello to sam for me
B. Tell sam i said hello
.
.
When we use say we don't mention the receiver.
When we use Tell we need mention the receiver.

lets have a look for few more examples

-She told me that she was in love
(here me is the receiver)
.

-She said that she was in love.
(here there is no receiver)
..........

-She told everybody that he had to go
(here everybody is the receiver)
.
She said that he had to go
(here there is no receiver)
